The process of describing the various phases of melanoma is referred to as staging melanoma. During the process of defining the melanoma stages, doctors consider the thickness and depth of the tumor. Also, the degree of transmission of melanoma cells to other lymph nodes and body parts is taken into consideration. Staging allows the health care providers to develop an effective treatment plan and establish the prognosis. Below are some of the different stages of melanoma:

0
At this point, the tumor is located in the epidermis and expanded to the dermis which is a deeper skin layer. A surgical operation is used to remove the tumor and surrounding tissue. Further treatment is not necessary, but it’s important to go for regular skin examinations to check for new melanoma as well as other skin conditions.

IA
The size of the tumor is about I millimeter thick. The skin’s outer layer is not cracked, and the cancerous cells have not been transmitted to lymph nodes and other body organs. A surgical operation is applied to remove the tumor and other surrounding tissues. Follow-up examinations are necessary to prevent further complications and other skin conditions.

IB
At this phase, the tumor can be ulcerated with a thickness of 1 millimeter or not ulcerated with a thickness of 1-2 millimeters. The cancerous cells have not expanded to the lymph or any other body parts. The tumor is removed through surgical operation. Skin examinations should continue to check for new melanoma and other skin cancer issues.

IIA
The size of the tumor tend to be 1-2 millimeters and ulcerated, or ulcerated with a thickness of 2-4 millimeters. The cancerous cells have not been transmitted to other body organs. A surgical operation is used to remove the tumor and other surrounding tissue. The patient should go for follow-up examinations to prevent new melanoma and other skin cancer problems.

IIB
At this stage, the tumor is ulcerated with a thickness of about 2-4 millimeters or not ulcerated with a thickness of over 4 millimeters. The tumor has not expanded to lymph nodes and other body organs at this phase. A surgical operation is the best way to get rid of this tumor and some nearby tissues. Doctors may suggest additional treatment options.

IIC
At IIC stage, the tumor is ulcerated with a thickness of over 4 millimeters. The tumor tends to be aggressive and can spread quickly. A surgical method is used to remove the tumor, and the health care provider may recommend further treatment.

IIIA, IIIB and IIIC
The thickness of the tumor varies during this phase. The cancerous tissues have spread to nearby lymph nodes as well as some body organs. A surgical operation is used to remove cancerous lymph nodes. Yervoy and Imygic immunotherapies are some of the approved adjuvant therapies for Phase III melanoma.

IV
Stage four is the most critical stage of melanoma. The tumor cells have been transmitted to lymph nodes as well as other body organs. Phase IV melanoma is also referred to as metastatic melanoma. A surgical operation is applied to remove the tumor and cancerous lymph nodes. Doctors may recommend immunotherapy, targeted therapy and clinical trials for the additional treatment of Phase 4 melanoma.

Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) is used to indicate the fraction of the UV rays from the sun that can penetrate a fabric. It represents the percentage of UV rays that can reach the skin with and without protection from clothing. For example, a long sleeved shirt that has a UPF of say 50 can only allow 1/50th UV radiation from the sun to the skin.
