Snorkelers gain the most obvious benefit, because you float face-down for extended periods with your back, thighs, and calves fully exposed to overhead sun.
A suit rated UPF 50+ blocks that exposure without reapplication, which matters when you can't easily leave the water to top up sunscreen.
For divers, the suit adds a thin barrier against:
- Jellyfish tentacles and hydroid stings while ascending or on safety stops
- Sea lice (jellyfish larvae), which typically sting under swimwear where they get trapped
- Abrasions from coral reefs, rocks, and boat ladders
Open water swimmers often choose them for reduced drag and full coverage. Suits with thumb loops and foot stirrups stay in place through repeated stroke cycles instead of riding up.
Surfing, Kayaking, and Other Surface Sports
Surfers spend most of a session sitting upright with shoulders, neck, and forearms in direct sunlight. A lightweight lycra suit handles that better than a rash vest alone, and it won't wash off during duck dives.
