Skin Areas That Still Need Sunscreen When Wearing Full Body Cover Swimsuits!

Apply broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen to every exposed area, including your face, ears, neck, hands, feet, and any skin between garment openings. Use an SPF of 30 or higher, apply it generously about 15 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply at least every two hours or after swimming, sweating, or towel drying.

Pay attention to exposed skin around the wrists, ankles, neckline, and back openings. Your swimsuit may shift while you swim, so recheck these areas regularly. A full-body design also cannot protect your scalp, eyes, or lips; wear a wide-brimmed hat, UV-blocking sunglasses, and lip protection with SPF.

Heat Management in Full-Coverage Suits

Full-coverage swimwear can reduce direct sun exposure, but it cannot prevent heat buildup by itself. Your comfort depends mainly on fabric breathability, moisture evaporation, color, thickness, air temperature, and how hard you exercise.

Breathability and Moisture Handling

Choose a suit made from lightweight, quick-drying fabric such as nylon, polyester, or a stretch blend designed for swimwear. These materials usually shed water faster than heavy cotton, which can become saturated, cling to your skin, and increase discomfort.

Moisture-wicking fabric moves sweat toward the outer surface, where air can help it evaporate. This process works best when the suit fits closely without compressing you and when air can circulate around exposed areas such as your face, hands, and feet.

Look for:

  • Mesh or ventilated panels in nonessential areas
  • Flat seams that reduce friction
  • A close but flexible fit
  • Quick-drying, lightweight construction

Water can limit evaporation while you swim, so a full suit may feel warmer during sustained activity than a shorter swimsuit.

Fabric Color and Thickness

Dark colors absorb more solar radiation than light colors, which can make a black or navy suit feel hotter in direct sunlight. Light-colored or reflective fabrics may reduce surface heating, although they do not eliminate heat exposure.

Fabric thickness also affects comfort. Thin swim fabrics generally dry faster and allow more flexibility, while thicker materials provide more insulation and may hold heat near your skin. Neoprene suits, for example, are designed to retain warmth and can become uncomfortable in warm water or hot weather.

UPF 50+ rating indicates strong protection from ultraviolet radiation when the fabric covers your skin, but it does not measure how cool the suit feels. Check the garment’s care label and choose a fabric weight suited to the water temperature and activity.
