Stinger Suits Compared With Wetsuits and Rash Guards!

Stinger suits, wetsuits, and rash guards all cover skin, but they solve different problems: one blocks stings and UV in warm water, another adds thermal insulation, and the third leaves parts of your body exposed.
Warm-Water Protection Versus Thermal Insulation
A stinger suit is made from thin, stretchy fabric — usually Lycra, spandex, nylon, or chlorine-resistant polyester/PBT. It creates a physical barrier against jellyfish tentacles and typically carries a UPF rating, but it adds almost no warmth.
Wetsuits work differently. Neoprene traps a thin layer of water against your skin and provides genuine thermal insulation, which is why thickness is measured in millimetres.

In tropical waters like those over the Great Barrier Reef, a wetsuit often becomes uncomfortably hot during surface snorkelling, while a stinger suit stays cool.
When a Wetsuit Is the Better Choice
Choose neoprene when heat loss, not stings, is your main concern. Long dives, cooler seasons, deeper water, and repeated entries all drain body heat faster than a thin skin can manage.
A wetsuit also gives you tougher sting protection because the fabric is thicker and denser than stinger suit material. You do not need to layer both.
Consider a wetsuit if you are:
- Scuba diving, especially on multiple or extended dives
- Swimming in water below roughly 20°C
- Spending long periods in water sports where you are wet and exposed to wind
- Needing abrasion protection around coral, rocks, or boat surfaces
The trade-off is bulk, restricted movement, and added buoyancy that affects weighting.
