Traveling During Jellyfish Stinger Season

In northern Australia, stinger season generally runs from November to May, with box jellyfish and Irukandji most common in that window. Local authorities and reef operators often require or supply suits during these months.
Similar advice applies in parts of Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines, though seasonal patterns vary by location.
Pack a suit if your trip includes:
- Reef tours or liveaboards in tropical waters
- Beach time outside patrolled, netted swimming enclosures
- Extended snorkelling with children, who cover less distance but stay in longer
Stinger nets reduce risk from larger box jellyfish, but they don't reliably stop Irukandji, which can be smaller than a fingernail. Check local signage and lifeguard advice before entering the water.
